Predictions XXI Oscars Edition

Today is the day when all the stars come out and and shine and blah, blah, today are the Oscars and so I’ve decided to do a post letting you know who is going to win based on my inside of the industry. I’m going to focus on the main categories. Here are the Nominees and the ones I think will win. Here is a ballot that you can print for yourself , is a PDF file. Yahoo Ballot.

Best Picture:

-Avatar
-The Blindside
-District 9
-An Education
-The Hurt Locker (Winner)
-Inglorious Basterds
-Precious (Might take it 2nd choice)
-A Serious Man
-Disney/Pixar’s Up
-Up In the air

“Avatar” is a technological breakthrough but it isn’t the best movie, so it should not win. I loved “Inglorious Basterds”, I’m a Tarantino fan so I voted for this one, but it’s a touchy subject and a fantasy so that takes it out of the running. “District9″ was good but in the end is a forgettable story. “Precious” and “The Blindside” are both on the running but “Precious” has the most potential to create an upset on “The Hurt Locker” which has the war against it or in it’s favor depending which way you in lean on the subject and some people might not vote for it just because of that.

Best Director:

-James Cameron (Avatar)
-Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) (Second option Winner)
-Quentin Tarantino (Inglorious Baterds)
-Lee Daniels (Precious) (Winner)
-Jason Reitman (Up In The Air)

Directors are a bit hard, James Cameron has the clout and that might influence voters on giving it to him. If “The Hurt Locker” wins Best Picture, Kathryn Bigelow should win Best Director, but it has happened that Best Picture isn’t necessarily connected to Best Director, if this was the case then the Best Director award would go to Lee Daniels “Precious” for getting those performances out his actors.

Best Actor:

-Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart)
-George Clooney (Up In The Air) (Second Option)
-Colin Fairth (A Single Man)
-Morgan Freeman (Invictus)
-Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) (Winner)

Everyone was raving about the performance from Jeff Bridges when “Crazy Heart” came out but now everyone is talking about Jeremy Renner from “The Hurt Locker”. I’m going to go with Jeremy Renner as the winner and George Clooney from “Up In the Air” as the upset, you wouldn’t believe the mans clout and likeability in Hollywood.

Best Actress:

-Sandra Bullock (The Blindside)(Second Option)
-Hellen Mirren (The Last Station)
-Carey Mulligan (An Education)
-Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) (Winner)
-Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia)

I’m not going to lie, I haven’t seen any of these movies, but based on general knowledge and the bits and pieces of performance I’ve seen the award must go to Gabourey Sidibe for “Precious”, Sandra Bullock did a good job but in the end what she did doesn’t look to me like a big stretch compared to other roles that she has played. Happy New Year!, welcome to The First Predictions Post for 2010. I closed last year with a two week winning streak of predicting the weekend Box Office, let’s see if it can continue. This weekend (New Year’s weekend) is typically slow so movie studios don’t really release anything, so we are going to have to see if the movies that opened last weekend change much in their positions, I’m guessing no. I asked the stewardess if she wanted to join the mile high club, but she just laughed at me, which can only mean that she is dying to do it, I’m really good at picking up hints. But nothing can keep me from providing you with the knowledge of what the Box Office will look like come Monday, because of the movies opening this weekend it should be fairly easy to predict the weekend.
