So here we are again and I guess that things haven’t changed much except that now I have a scar pretty close to my groin. The winner of this weekends box office after much debate was “Clash Of The Titans” making $26.7 million taking the number one spot for the second weekend in a row, most people went to see it in 3D because people are stupid and love gimmicks. In second place the new Steve Carrel and Tina Fey movie “Date Night” made $25.2 million which isn’t bad for a movie that cost $55 million to produce. “How to Train your Dragon” made it into third place after grossing $24.9 million down only 14% from the previous weekend, this is good because the drop has been very small meaning that the word of mouth is carrying this movie to profit. (Number Latimes)
1. “Clash of the Titans” (Warner/Legendary): Opened to $26.7 million on its second weekend, down 56%. $54 million overseas in 31 foreign territories. Domestic total: $110.5 million. International total: $119.2 million.

I’m back from vacation and is business as usual. This weekend the box office saw the movie “How to train a dragon” win the top proving that 3D is here to stay until people discover that is a waste of money and stop paying for it. “How To Train a Dragon” opened with $43.3 million domestically the movie cost $165 million to make, 3D venues accounted for most of the take, but the movie under performed by 27% compared to “Monsters Vs Aliens” the last Dreamworks animated feature which opened in less 3D venues that Dragon, the jury is still out on whether this one is going to be a hit. in second place “Alice In Wonderland” continues to do well in the theaters Bringing it’s total to $293 million domestically taking $17.3 million over the weekend. In Third place “Hot Tub Machine” made an ok $13.7 million, the movie cost $36 million to make movie looks to be a money maker for MGM.
In limited release, Focus Features expanded “Greenberg” from three theaters to 181 and took in a pretty good $1.1 million, bringing its total to $1.2 million. Director Atom Egoyan’s “Chloe” opened to a soft $1 million at 350 locations. Disney opened its animation documentary “Waking Sleeping Beauty” to a modest $33,100 at five theaters. Again sorry for not showing up last week, you can read my reasons on the Prediction post I did on Saturday. Talking about Predictions, I did really bad, let’s hope that all the crap clears up to get great Predictions this Friday. Let’s get on with the Box Office “Alice In Wonderland” is still playing strong to audiences and this weekend earned $34.5 million on it’s third weekend, the movie has made $265.8 million domestically and $300 million internationally, this movie has proven a hit, will see how it performs once “Clash of The Titans” comes out this weekend. The surprise of the weekend was “Diary of a Wimpy kid” based on the comic book series it made $21.8 million, the movie cost $15 million to produce, whichever way you slice it this movie is a hit. Wimpy kid wasn’t so wimpy because it manged to beat two movies with a lot of star power”The Bounty Hunter” which opened with $21 million the movie cost a bit over $40 million, the studio might recoup the investment and “Repo Man” which opened with $6.2 million which is a huge flop for a movie that cost $32 million to make, good luck on getting your money back on that one. Here is your top 10 (Numbers LA Times/Pic Trailer Addict)
1. “Alice in Wonderland” (Disney): $34.5 million on its third weekend, down 45%. $47 million overseas from 49 territories. Domestic total: $265.8 million. International total: $300 million.
2. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” (Fox 2000): Opened to $21.8 million.
3. “The Bounty Hunter” (Sony/Relativity): Opened to $21 million.
4. “Repo Men” (Universal/Relativity): Opened to $6.2 million.
5. “She’s Out of My League” (Paramount/DreamWorks): $6 million on its second weekend, down 38%. Domestic total: $20 million.
6. “Green Zone” (Universal): $6 million on its second weekend, down 58%. $7.4 million overseas in 23 territories. Domestic total: $24.7 million. International total: $20.4 million.
7. “Shutter Island” (Paramount): $4.8 million on its fifth weekend, down 42%. $15.1 million overseas in 48 territories. Domestic total: $115.8 million. International total: $106.5 million.
8. “Avatar” (Fox/Dune/Ingenious): $4 million on its 14th weekend, down 39%. $13 million overseas in 68 territories. Domestic total: $736.9 million. International total: $1.94 billion.
9. “Our Family Wedding” (Fox Searchlight): $3.8 million, down 50% on its second weekend. Domestic total: $13.7 million.
10. “Remember Me” (Summit): $3.3 million, down 59% on its second weekend. Domestic total: $13.9 million.
I will end the day with this post, based on my prediction I only got the first and fourth place right, tomorrow I will close my Oscar coverage. Let’s get to the Box Office, “Alice In Wonderland” opened to a surprising unexpected $210.3 million mostly from 3D screens to take the first spot, the movie was produced for about $200 million that includes the cost of converting the movie to 3D after production (The movies was shot in 2D). It looks like 3D is here to stay (sorry if I’m not excited) about 70% of the business came from 3D, but not just any 3D. Imax-3D was first then regular 3D screens and finally 2D (Read common) screens. In second place was “Brooklyn’s Finest” the only other wide opening for the weekend taking in $13.5 million. In limited release “The Ghost writer” continues to perform well making $1.3 million in 147 theaters. Summit Entertainment tried to get a little more box office for “The Hurt Locker,” which is already on DVD, the weekend of the Oscars didn’t have much success. Despite being one of two front-runners for best picture along with “Avatar,” it took in just $439,000 at 274 theaters. Its domestic gross to date is $14.7 million. (Numbers LATimes/Pic Traileraddict)
1. “Alice in Wonderland” (Disney): Opened to $116.3 million domestically and $94 million overseas in 40 territories.
2. “Brooklyn’s Finest” (Overture/Millennium): Opened to $13.5 million domestically.
3. “Shutter Island” (Paramount): Took in $13.3 million on its third weekend, down 41%. $17 million overseas. Domestic total: $95.8 million. International total: $57 million.
4. “Cop Out” (Warner Bros.): $9.1 million on its second weekend, down 50%. Domestic total: $32.4 million.
5. “Avatar” (Fox/Dune/Ingenious): $7.7 million on its 12th weekend, down 44%. $21.8 million overseas in 68 territories. Domestic total: $720.2 million. International total: $1.88 billion.
6. “The Crazies” (Overture/Participate/Imagenation): $7 million on its second weekend, down 56%. Domestic total: $27.4 million.
7. “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” (Fox/Dune/Ingenious): $5.1 million on its fourth weekend, down 47%. $9.3 million overseas in 64 territories. Domestic total: $78 million. International total: $110.7 million.
8. “Valentine’s Day” (Warner Bros./New Line): $4.3 million on its fourth weekend, down 53%. $5.1 million overseas in 51 territories. Domestic total: $106.4 million. International total: $96.2 million.
9. “Crazy Heart” (Fox Searchlight): $3.4 million on its 12th weekend, up 36%. Domestic total: $29.6 million.
10. “Dear John” (Sony/Relativity): $2.9 million on its fifth weekend, down 41%. Domestic total: $76.7 million.
“Shutter Island” is a great movie and word is getting around, it is because of this reason that the movie stayed on the top of the Box Office bringing in $22.2 million, “Shutter Island” is starting to look a lot like the Last DiCaprio, Scorsese collaboration “The Departed” which also stayed as number one after it’s initial opening. “Shutter Island” is on pace to pass the $100 million dollar mark. A good sign that we can expect more collaborations between the two. Paramount stands to make some money on this one, the movie cost between $75 million and $100 million to produce. The buddy comedy starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan “Cop Out” grabbed the second spot opening with $18.6 million not bad for a movie that cost $37 million to produce. The other opening this weekend was “The Crazies” which took the third spot making $16.5 million, the movie cost less than $20 million to make making it a financial winner for Overture Films. (Numbers/Pic LATimes/Paramount)
1. “Shutter Island” (Paramount): $22.2 million, down 46% on its second weekend. $19 million overseas in 20 foreign territories. Domestic total: $75.1 million. International total: $34 million.
2. “Cop Out” (Warner Bros.): Opened to $18.6 million.
3. “The Crazies” (Overture/Participant/Imagenation): Opened to $16.5 million.
4. “Avatar” (Fox/Dune/Ingenious): $14 million, down 14% on its 11th weekend. $36.1 million overseas in 70 foreign markets. Domestic total: $706.9 million. International total: $1.84 billion.
5. “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief” (Fox/Dune/Ingenious): $9.8 million, down 36% on its third weekend. $19 million overseas in 65 foreign markets. Domestic total: $71.2 million. International total: $95.4 million.
6. “Valentine’s Day” (Warner Bros./New Line): $9.5 million, down 43% on its third weekend. $10.4 million overseas in 58 foreign markets. Domestic total: $100.4 million. International total: $87.4 million.
7. “Dear John” (Sony/Relativity): $5 million, down 30% on its fourth weekend. Domestic total: $72.6 million.
8. “The Wolfman” (Universal/Relativity): $4.1 million, down 58% on its third weekend. $10.8 million overseas in 57 markets. Domestic total: $57.2 million. International total: $63.3 million.
9. “The Tooth Fairy” (Fox/Walden): $3.5 million, down 21% on its sixth weekend. Domestic total: $53.9 million.
10. “Crazy Heart” (Fox Searchlight): $2.5 million, down 14% on its 11th weekend. Domestic total: $25.1 million.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s and Marin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” opened with $40 million the biggest opening for the duo. “Shutter Island” benefited from virtually no new competition.
This weekend, on the other hand, there were almost no movies aimed at a young male audience — the only one playing widely (besides “Avatar”) was “The Wolfman,” the disappointing revival of the classic monster movie, which didn’t even make it to the $10-million mark. (Of course, one could argue that “Shutter Island” not only benefited from “Wolfman’s” weak opening but also contributed to it.) And even women didn’t turn out in such high numbers to see their preferred vehicle of last weekend, “Valentine’s Day,” as the film dropped 69%. (Numbers LATimes)
1. “Shutter Island” (Paramount): Opened to $40.2 million domestically and just over $9 million internationally from a smattering of foreign territories over the weekend.
2. “Valentine’s Day” (Warner Bros./New Line): Grossed $17.2 million in its second weekend of release with a drop of 69% from last weekend’s holiday opening. Domestic total: $88 million.
3. “Avatar” (Fox/Dune/Ingenious): $16.1 million in its 10th week of a release as the James Cameron movie hits $688 million domestically. A $51-million gross in foreign territories puts its international box office at $1.78 billion.
4. “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” (Fox/Dune/Ingenious): Grossed $15.3 million for a drop of 51% in its second weekend of release. The film earned $23 million overseas for a domestic total of $58.8 million and a foreign total of $67.8 million.
5. “The Wolfman” (Universal/Relativity): $9.8-million gross and a 69% drop, resulting in a domestic total that reaches $50.3 million for a production that cost more than $100 million.
6. “Dear John” (Sony/Relativity): $7.7 million in its third weekend of release for a drop of 52%. Domestic total: $66.3 million.
7. “The Tooth Fairy” (Fox/Walden): $4.5 million as it enters its second month of release. Domestic total: $49.8 million.
8. “Crazy Heart” (Fox Searchlight): $2.9 million in its 10th weekend. Domestic total: $21.5 million.
9. “From Paris With Love”(Lionsgate/Europa): $2.5 million in its third weekend, a 54% drop from an under-performing second weekend. Domestic total: $21.2 million.
10. “Edge of Darkness” (Warner Bros./GK Films): $2.2 million in its fourth weekend, down 54%. Domestic total: $40.3 million.
That tittle was easy as it was for people to go out and watch a movie that was specifically tailored to squeeze as much as it could out that holiday. More people should be like me, going out the night before Valentine’s, getting so drunk that you can’t move the next day, that is living, ok maybe not. Here is a rundown of the Box Office. As I said “Valentine’s Day” was by far the winner and the new record holder, taking the record away from 2007′s “Ghost Rider” which collected $52 million. “Valentine’s Day” made $66.9 million in the US and Canada, the movie cot $52 million to produce making it a huge hit for the studio. “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The lighting thief” (I hate long tittles) opened a total $38.8 million movie cost $95 million to produce making it a so so opening domestically. “The Wolfman” wasn’t too far behind with a total $36.5 million, I expected better from you Wolfman, the movie cost between $110 million to $150 million to produce. Will see how Wolfie does against the Leonardo DiCaprio/Martin Scorsese movie Shutter Island coming out next weekend. The hold overs from last weekend were “From Paris with Love” which only dropped 32% bringing it’s total to $17.9 million (You should watch this one if you are looking for a good action flick) Dear John dropped 47% from last weekend after people woke up of whatever come they were on. Full numbers at the bottom (Numbers LA Times)
1. “Valentine’s Day” (Warner Bros./New Line): Debuted to $66.9 million over four days, $56.4 million over three days. $30.4 million in 52 foreign markets.

10. “The Book of Eli”(Warner Bros./Alcon): $4.4 million over four days on its fifth weekend, $3.6 million over three days, down 23%. Domestic total: $88.4 million.
Finally “Avatar” fell to second place, thanks in part to “Dear John” gay people went out in droves to see it let me scratch that, actually gay people think that this movie is too gay for them to go see it. But getting to business “Dear John” made an impressive $32.4 million to take the number one spot, the movie cost between $25 and $35 million, whichever way it’s a hit. By the way, who watches this movies? “Avatar” made $23.6 million to take the second spot bringing it’s domestic total to $630.1 million that was a drop of 25%, the biggest to date for the James Cameron movie. “From Paris with Love” the John Travolta movie opened to a disappointing $8.1 million, Lionsgate paid $12 million to distribute the movie, this is the second movie in a row that John Travolta has made that hasn’t done good, his last movie “The taken of Pelham 123″ was also a flop. Mel Gibson’s “The edge of Darkness” dropped 59% making $7 million over the weekend bringing it’s total to a paltry $29.1 million to take fourth place.
1. “Dear John” (Sony Screen Gems/Relativity): $32.4-million opening.

6. “When in Rome” (Disney): $5.5 million, down 55% on its second weekend. Domestic total: $20.9 million.
7. “The Book of Eli” (Warner Bros./Alcon): $4.8 million, down 46% on its fourth weekend. Domestic total: $82.2 million.
8. “Crazy Heart” (Fox Searchlight): $3.7 million, up 58% on its eighth weekend as it more than tripled its theater count to 819. Domestic total: $11.2 million.
9. “Legion” (Sony Screen Gems): $3.4 million, down 53% on its third weekend. Domestic total: $34.6 million.
10. “Sherlock Holmes” (Warner Bros./Village Roadshow): $2.6 million, down 42% on its seventh weekend. $16.6 million overseas in 57 territories. Domestic total: $201.6 million. International total: $242.5 million.
Because of the title of this post. I’m not posting a picture of the number one movie as I usually do. Instead the honor goes to number two. So Mel Gibson came back to the big screen after being away from it for 7 years with his movie ‘Edge Of Darkness’ opened with a healthy $17.1 million. It is one of the lowest openings for a Mel Gibson movie since ‘Braveheart’. Kristen Bell’s ‘When in Rome’ opened with $12.1 million. Freaking ‘Avatar’ (enough people move on!) made an extra $30 million to capture the top yet again. Bringing it’s Total to $2.04 billion. The only other thing that I have for you today is to expect the Grammy’s coverage tomorrow. (Number LATimes)
1. “Avatar” (Fox/Dune/Ingenious): $30 million, down just 14% on its seventh weekend. $95 million overseas in 120 territories. Domestic total: $594.4 million. International total: $1.45 billion.
2. “Edge of Darkness” (Warner Bros./GK Films): $17.1-million opening.
3. “When in Rome” (Disney): $12.1-million opening.
4. “The Tooth Fairy” (Fox/Walden): $10 million, down 29% on its second weekend. $5.6 million overseas in 20 markets. Domestic total: $26.1 million. International total: $25.2 million.
5. “The Book of Eli” (Warner Bros./Alcon): $8.8 million, down 44% on its third weekend. Domestic total: $74.4 million.
6. “Legion” (Sony Screen Gems): $6.8 million, down 61% on its second weekend. Domestic total: $28.6 million.
7. “The Lovely Bones” (Paramount): $4.7 million, down 44% on its third weekend in wide release. Domestic total: $38 million.
8. “Sherlock Holmes” (Warner Bros./Village Roadshow): $4.5 million, down 32% on its sixth weekend. $15.6 million overseas in 57 territories. Domestic total: $197.6 million. International total: $219 million.
9. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel”: $4 million, down 38% on its sixth weekend. $10.8 million overseas in 45 territories. Domestic total: $209.3 million. International total: $190 million.
10. “It’s Complicated” (Universal/Relativity): $3.7 million, down 36% on its sixth weekend. $8.1 million overseas in 37 territories. Domestic total: $104 million. International total: $63.7 million.
The box office is late but I finally feel better to write about it. Of Course ‘Avatar’ was number one making $36 million over the weekend bringing it’s total very close to beating that of ‘Titanic’. It is only $2 million shy of beating the movie directed by Cameron in 1998. ‘Avatar’ $1.841 billion VS ‘Titanic’ $1.843 billion, it’s gotten to this total thanks to the overpriced charged in the 3D screens where most people choose to watch the movie. It still lags in attendance if comparing both.
The other movies were a non factor. “Legion” did pretty good with a total of $18 million to grab the second spot it only cost $25 million, putting in a great spot to turn a profit. ‘The Tooth Fairy’ had a soft opening for a Dwayne Jhonson family movie by making $14.5 million not good news given that the budget was $48 million. ‘Extraordinary Measures’ opened with an scary $7 million the movie cost $31 million to make meaning that this movie is pretty much dead. (Numbers LATimes)
1. “Avatar” (Fox/Dune/Ingenious): $36 million on its sixth weekend, down 16%. $107 million overseas in 111 markets. Domestic total: $552.8 million. Overseas total: $1.288 billion.
2. “Legion” (Sony Screen Gems): Opened to $18.2 million.
3. “The Book of Eli” (Warner Bros./Alcon): $17 million, down 48% on its second weekend. Domestic total: $62 million.
4. “The Tooth Fairy” (Fox/Walden): $14.5-million opening.
5. “The Lovely Bones” (Paramount): $8.8 million on its second weekend of wide release, down 48%. Domestic total: $31.6 million.
6. “Sherlock Holmes” (Warner Bros./Village Roadshow): $7.1 million on its fifth weekend, down 28%. $17.1 million in 55 territories overseas. Domestic total: $191.6 million. Foreign total: $196.5 million.
7. “Extraordinary Measures” (CBS): $7-million opening.
8. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” (Fox/New Regency): $6.5 million on its fifth weekend, down 44%. Domestic total: $204.2 million. International total: $175 million.
9. “It’s Complicated” (Universal/Relativity): $6.2 million on its fifth weekend, down 24%. $10.5 million overseas in 32 territories. Domestic total: $98.6 million. International total: $50.5 million.
10. “The Spy Next Door” (Lionsgate/Relativity): $4.8 million on its second weekend, down 51%. Domestic total: $18.7 million.
Avatar won the number one spot again. Do our people can’t go see anything else? ‘Avatar’ was number one with $54.5 million erasing any doubt that it will surpass ‘Titanic’ to become the highest grossing film ever. As of today, “Avatar” has grossed $1.12 billion internationally and $505 million domestically. Within the next week, it will surpass the $1.24 billion that “Titanic” collected overseas. Shortly thereafter, it should pass the 1997-98 film’s domestic total of $600.8 million. ‘The book of Eli’ opened at number two with a take of $38 million and ‘The Lovely Bones’ opened on third with $20.5 million. ‘The Spy Next door’ Opened with $13 million a so so opening but families gave it an A- so it might make some money. Let’s see if ‘Avatar’ continues it’s reign. With the winning this weekend it seems likely. (Numbers LATimes)
1. “Avatar” (Fox/Dune/Ingenious): $54.6 million on its fifth weekend, down just 15% on a three-day basis. $129 million overseas in 112 markets. Domestic total: $505 million. Foreign total: $1.12 billion.
2. “The Book of Eli” (Warner Bros./Alcon): $38-million opening.
3. “The Lovely Bones” (Paramount): $20.5 million in its nationwide debut. Including five previous weeks at three theaters, its domestic total is $21 million.
4. “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” (Fox/New Regency): $15 million on its fourth weekend, down 30% on a three-day basis. $14.3 million overseas in 56 markets. Domestic total: $196.1 million. Foreign total: $158.5 million.
